A stirring image of men who were among the first Blacks to fight for their country, and their own freedom. Such men played an important role in the North's victory in the Civil War. Southerners were willing to send their sons into battle, but not their slaves. The North's recognition and use of the Black Man's willingness to fight and to contribute could have been one of the contributing factors to the North's eventual victory.
