A stirring image of men who were among the first Blacks to fight for their country, and their own freedom. Such men played an important role in the North's victory in the Civil War. Southerners were willing to send their sons into battle, but not their slaves. The North's recognition and use of the Black Man's willingness to fight and to contribute could have been one of the contributing factors to the North's eventual victory.

I love this photograph. It takes me back to a day when men played simply for the love of the game.

David Farragut was the Civil War Admiral who made the famous Quote, "Damn the Torpedos, Full Speed Ahead." He said that during the battle of Mobile Bay. Subordinates were telling him to slow down, but he wanted to ignore the risk, and move forward.
